Tinker took the inspiration for the Jordan line from virtually everywhere. At the time of designing the Jordan VII, he was in Portland, where he saw an African art poster which featured a guitar player with a guitar shaped like the African continent. It was precisely this year that Michael expressed a wish for the next model to look youthful, interesting, yet sophisticated.
Without thinking too much, Tinker headed to the store where he wanted to buy a poster. Of course, the shop owner rejected him saying that it was advertising and promoting Afropop music radio show. When Tinker told the man who he was and what he was doing, he softened and sold it for $15. And this is how the Jordan VIIs got its inspiration from the West African tribe patterns featured on this poster.
1992 saw the famous Barcelona Olympics, where special Jordan VIIs with the number 9 rather than 23 were made. Number 9 was worn by Jordan on the jersey of the first and true Dream Team.
The global launch of Jordan VII was inspired by the cartoon character Buggs Bunny, so the Jordan VIIs are often simply referred to as Jordan Buggs Bunny.
